Endangered sea turtles affected by the BP Gulf oil spill are finding their way home again. The first 22 of several hundred rehabilitated sea turtles were recently released back into the Gulf of Mexico. In this edition of Going Green, Rebecca Ward has more on the Gulf turtle operation and what it will take to get them swimming again.

Relaxing in Grand Cayman is what it’s all about for Chris while he’s in the Caribbean. He takes in a little scuba diving and feeds giant stingrays at underwater Sting Ray City. He then visits the endangered Giant Sea Turtles at the Cayman Turtle Farm and sends postcards from HELL – a unique part of the island characterized by its sharp lava rock. Chris also talks calypso with Barefoot Man – a local legend. Finally, he finds time to eat at the local Taste of Grand Cayman food festival.

The turtle of the Amazon is disappearing, that small, slow animal has to fight for survival early, bastacem no natural predators, man can be even more dangerous paa species. The MEPA NGOs since 2004 is making a preservation work that has allowed the return in the nature of thousands of turtles.

There are many animals in this world that have evolved into strange forms and images, the aardvark and the platypus, for example. Perhaps less known but no less weird is the mata mata turtle. This South American turtle has evolved to look like leaves and debris scattered on the river bottom where it hides in wait, ready to ambush unsuspecting prey. Jean-Michel Cousteau, his son Fabien, and daughter Celine, came across one of these turtles while diving in the Amazon River in the film Return to the Amazon, part of the PBS series Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Adventures. Jean-Michel discovered that although the turtle looks bizarre to him, perhaps the mata mata feels the same about Jean-Michel.
